Pastor Helps Bring Ten Commandments Back

In 1980, the Supreme Court ruled in Stone v. Graham that the Ten commandments could not be displayed on public property in Kentucky. Twenty years later, after seeing what the lack of morality has done to the public schools, Christians in Kentucky have decided that enough is enough: it's time to put God's commandments to His people back where they belong: in the public square.

In the past year, Ten Commandments rallies have sprung up all over the state, including one in Corbin, Kentucky. About 7,000 people were in attendance not including those who had to be turned away due to lack of space, according to Herschel Walker, pastor of Hopewell Baptist Church in Corbin, Kentucky, who organized it. Pastor Walker has also been a key statewide leader in this regard.

Yard Signs Blossom In addition to the rallies, thousands of citizens all across Kentucky have posted blue and white yard signs in front of their houses, which declare, " We stand for the Ten Commandments." This grassroots support for the Ten commandments paid off when Paul Patton signed a bill into law on April 22 which allows the public schools to display them as an historical document.

Grassroots Key Walker says that it could not have happened without the grassroots support of the people. "you can't separate the Ten Commandments from our nation's history," he told Impact. "People realize there's a problem when six-year-olds are killing each other." Why should Christians work to restore the Ten commandments to public life? "Because it's god's Word," said Walker. "They're not just a document, but the formula for an orderly society. If you remove the Ten Commandments, you remove God." " I'm happy to see a man like Pastor Walker, who is willing to step out in faith and do something like this," said Barbara Collier, Field Director for the Center for Reclaiming America. " This wasn't just some publicity stunt; these people knew it was the right thing to do."
